Extra Pfizer doses ‘no comfort’ to rural GPs amid AstraZeneca concerns

GPs are warning that the extra 20 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine announced by the federal government will be little comfort to small local clinics tasked with vaccinating the bulk of the population.
The Commonwealth made the announcement on Friday following a decision by health authorities to recommend only people over 50 get the AstraZeneca vaccine because of the risk of a very rare blood clotting complication that is more likely in younger people.
RACGP Rural Chair Dr Michael Clements, who is also a GP based in Townsville, says 20 million extra Pfizer doses will be “no comfort” to GPs in regional areas.
