Environmentalists and fishers clash over best way to prevent marine life entanglements

Footage that appears to show turtles caught in gillnets off a north Queensland town has prompted an environmental group to call for further regulations on commercial fishers.

The Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS) released the footage from a Mackay beach earlier this week, calling for the Queensland government to legislate for cameras to be installed on fishing boats, and catch limits to be created for by-catch.

Fisheries campaign manager Simon Miller from the AMCS said more needed to be done to protect marine life.
