Engine failure suspected as safety bureau launches probe into plane crash

An investigation has been launched into the suspected engine failure and forced landing of a small plane after it crashed in a paddock in Logan, hit trees and burst into flames.

Bystanders dragged the 24-year-old pilot away from the burning wreckage just after 2.30pm on Friday after the plane crashed at a property in Lyons, about 25 kilometres south of Brisbane.

The pilot, who suffered chest, abdominal and head injuries, as well as broken bones, was airlifted to Princess Alexandra Hospital in a critical but stable condition.
