‘Eating disorders thrive in isolation’: Pandemic triggers spike in cases – Sydney Morning Herald
Helpline says lockdown stress and anxiety, along with changes to routine, have lead to a spike in eating disorders and body image concerns.

“The general increased stress that many people are going through because of COVID amplifies when you’re experiencing a mental illness such as an eating disorder,” Ms Thomson said. “When people are isolated – eating disorders thrive in isolation.”
Ms Thomson said stress made eating disorders more likely to develop for the first time and more severe when they did so. Eighty-five per cent of contacts were people using the helpline for the first time, compared with 71 per cent a year ago.
