Dugong mating footage captured off Yeppoon beach ‘remarkable’ and ‘rare’

Petra was on her afternoon walk along a beach in Yeppoon, Queensland when one of her dogs noticed something in the surf.
Key points:
- Rare footage of dugongs mating was captured off the coast of Yeppoon, Queensland
- The Morton Bay dugong population is well documented, but the specie’s movement elsewhere is not
- Human-related injuries remain the biggest threat to the dugong population, which is classed as vulnerable
“I saw a fin coming out of the water, so I called the dogs back,” she said.
“My initial thought was, there is a dolphin in trouble.”
With her heart racing, the hobby photographer, who did not want her last name published, scrambled to launch her new drone over the waves to see what was going on.
