Before 2020, a short stretch of road near the White House held little significance for Washington DC — or America.
There’s an expensive hotel on one corner and an old church on the other. If you happen to stand in the middle of the road, you can just glimpse the White House across Lafayette Park.
But in my seven months in Washington DC, I witnessed these two blocks become the centre of one of America’s most tumultuous years.
From the huge outcry over the killing of a black man at the hands of police, outrage over America’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic, to the apparent end of the Trump era.
The social and political upheaval all played out on what’s now officially known as Black Lives Matter Plaza.
