DID YOU KNOW that until the 1st World War the area now known as Teneriffe was considered to be part of Bulimba?? Trains on the “Bulimba Branch Line” crossed Ann Street carrying coal to the Bulimba (later
Newstead) Gasworks and the Newfarm Power Station, sugar cane to the CSR Refinery and wool to the numerous Woolstores in Teneriffe. The Bulimba Brewery was also located on the corner of Florence Street and Vernon Terrace! It was not until the 1st World War that the part of Bulimba on the north side of the river changed it’s name to Teneriffe to avoid confusion with mail deliveries.
