The 21-year-old and 21st seed beat out last years quarter-finalist Sandgren 7-5 6-1 6-1 in a match that lit up twice as the pair traded vicious body blows.
Sandgren then repeated his regular complaints about hotel quarantine, labelling it a joke of preparation.
