Darwin bowls club rises above pedants and misogynists to celebrate 60-year history

A dress code normally means wearing clothes that are longer, darker, hotter, have more fabric, and are more stuffy.

But one cheeky member of the Darwin Bowls and Social Club once tangoed with eviction because their long socks were not pulled up.

This is in a town where socks were once taken seriously — knee-high stockings were de rigueur for public servants around the time of self-government in 1978.

The bowls club, celebrating its 60th anniversary this weekend, is now a relaxed, modern community club…
