Has become England’s new coronavirus hotspot, as a local university is hit by what is believed to be the single-largest outbreak in the UK. Infections in Newcastle have shot up by 60% to 250 cases per 100,000, according to Public Health England data. Manchester, where cases have risen 35% to 200/10,000, currently ranks fourth on the list. St Helens, in Merseyside, jumped to fifth place after the number of infections rose by 82% to 202/10,000.
