Cuba’s Communist Party appoints Miguel Diaz-Canel as leader after decades of Castro rule
Cuba’s ruling Communist Party has elected President Miguel Diaz-Canel to succeed Raul Castro as party first secretary, the most powerful position in the country.

- Mr Diaz-Canel was the favourite to replace Raul Castro, ending 60 years of Castro rule
- It’s expected he will not move Cuba away from a one-party socialist system

The succession marks the end of six decades of rule by brothers Fidel and Raul Castro, who led Cuba’s 1959 revolution.
Mr Diaz-Canel, 60, who already succeeded Castro as President in 2018, had been widely expected to be nominated first party secretary.
