ATLANTA (CBS19 NEWS) — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say the first documented cases of a highly contagious COVID-19 variant in the United States have been identified in South Carolina.
According to a release, the B 1.351 variant was first identified in South Africa.
The CDC says it is in the early stages of its efforts to understand this variant of the virus, but it does say there is currently no evidence that infections caused by this variant cause more severe cases of the disease.
