The worldwide tally of COVID-19 cases has gone past the 80 million mark while the number of deaths related to the virus now stands at 1.75 million globally.

Data compiled by Johns Hopkins University reported the figure on Saturday morning after another 472,000 cases were recorded on Christmas Day.

The US is by far the leader among nations in cases of coronavirus illness, reporting nearly 18.8 million on Saturday.
