Coronavirus updates LIVE: Victorian cases ‘yet to peak’ as NSW COVID-19 cluster in Casula grows; Australian death toll stands at 108 – Brisbane Times
Cases in Victoria continued to rise over the weekend as the NSW government warned that state was also at a crucial moment..
A similar fine was handed down to eastern suburbs watering hole The Golden Sheaf last Friday, after images of long queues forming outside the venue were shared on the internet.
“The Star was aware of its obligations to establish and enforce their COVID-19 safety plan as we have visited twice over the past two weeks and provided information and advice on what they should be doing,” said Dimitri Argeres, the acting director of Compliance for Liquor and Gaming.
“There is a risk of COVID transmission if people are mingling while under the effect of alcohol.”
Mr Argeres said the fine followed a third inspection of the venue over the weekend, where inspectors saw further breaches of the COVID-19 safety plan, as different groups mingled and people stood while consuming alcohol.
“We want to send a strong message that businesses must manage these risks to ensure individual patrons and the community are protected,” he said.
“Its also really important that customers take responsibility by adhering to a venues’ protocols, providing their contact details when asked, and reporting any business that is not doing the right thing.”
Businesses face fines of up to $55,000 and a further $27,500 penalty may apply for each day an offence continues. Individuals face a fine of up to $11,000, six months imprisonment, or both.
