The research has raised the possibility of a controversial theory about the virus, scientists say.
Six miners who contracted a mysterious illness with symptoms similar to severe pneumonia in 2012 are at the centre of a new theory on the origins of COVID-19.
Three of the miners died, with a virtually forgotten study by a doctor who treated them in China unearthed amid the current pandemic.
The miners were working in a mine in Yunnan Province, where anal swabs were subsequently taken from bats, rats and shrews in the the shaft.
