They noted that a separate contact survey in Wuhan, the original epicentre of the virus, and Shanghai, China, showed that school closure and social distancing significantly reduced the rate of Covid-19 among contacts of school-aged children.
The transmission rates for asymptomatic cases remains unknown, and children are less likely than adults to develop symptoms.
