Boxes of census forms are waiting to be distributed across the country, in a dummy run ahead of next year’s statistical snapshot.

Deep in the basement of the Australian Bureau of Statistics headquarters in Canberra, preparations are underway to restore the reputation of the agency’s most important project.

- In 2016, the ABS was forced to pull its Census website down after a series of cyber attacks
