Boxes of census forms are waiting to be distributed across the country, in a dummy run ahead of next year’s statistical snapshot.

Deep in the basement of the Australian Bureau of Statistics headquarters in Canberra, preparations are underway to restore the reputation of the agency’s most important project.

- 100,000 households have been picked to take part in a Census Test on October 27
- In 2016, the ABS was forced to pull its Census website down after a series of cyber attacks
- The entire Census computer network has been rebuilt, with hopes there will not be a repeat performance
