Captain Sir Tom Moore, who raised $57 million for the NHS, dies aged 100 after contracting coronavirus

Captain Sir Tom Moore, the World War II veteran who raised millions for Britain’s National Health Service (NHS) in the early days of the coronavirus pandemic, has died after contracting the virus.

The 100-year-old captured the attention of the globe when he raised $57 million in the run-up to his birthday by completing 100 laps of his garden in Marston Moretaine, north of London, with the help of a walking frame.

Captain Sir Tom was hospitalised at Bedford Hospital with COVID-19 on January 31 after weeks of being treated for pneumonia.

His family announced his death via Twitter.
