Canberra Raiders receive representative injury allowance for John Bateman – Wide World of Sports
NRL ticks off use of loophole for Bateman
The Canberra Raiders have received a representative injury allowance due to the shoulder injury plaguing English international John Bateman’s 2020 campaign.
Nine News rugby league reporter Danny Weidler reports the NRL will allow the club to spend $120,000 this season on a replacement.
Should the club spend the $120,000 on a reinforcement it will not be counted in the salary cap, due to a new rule that was brought in to protect clubs against injuries suffered on international duty.
Bateman injured his shoulder playing in a Test match against Papua New Guinea last off-season.
Bateman who’s set to depart the club at the end of the season is yet to feature for the men in green this year due to the shoulder injury he suffered while playing for Great Britain last November.
The injury allowance will prove a massive boost for Raiders coach Ricky Stuart who’s already battling a number of selection headaches due to a mini injury crisis that’s decimated his forward pack.
Along with Bateman, prop Corey Horsburgh may miss the remainder of the season after suffering a foot injury last month.
Forward Sia Soliola will also be unavailable for the Raiders for several weeks after suffering a facial fracture in last Friday’s win over the Dragons.
