Can something be “germ-free”?

Everyone has probably done it hundreds of times, especially recently rubbing their hands with disinfectant, scrubbing kitchen counters with antibacterial wipes, patting a toilet seat cover in a public restroom, and trying to open the bathroom door with their feet, elbows, or shoulders all in the name of to keep these nasty, scary, invisible germs away. But what if all this meticulous cleaning is a pointless exercise? Is it even possible to keep germs away?
