Brisbane backpacker accommodation: Spring Hill Hotel owners fined over fire safety breaches
The owner of an inner-city Brisbane backpackers’ hostel that had an exit door permanently locked and other fire safety contraventions has been fined $15,000.
Danamill Pty Ltd, which owns Spring Hill Hotel, in Leichhardt St, Spring Hill, pleaded guilty to nine charges brought by Queensland Fire and Emergency Services.
While the ground floor hotel had not operated since 2016, a 25-bed backpackers’ hostel was still open on the first floor at the time of QFES inspections, Brisbane Magistrates Court heard.
Prosecutor Deborah Holliday said during four inspections between January and April, this year, QFES found smoke detectors had been removed and were sitting on a bench.
