Phil Kearns led a revolt against Rugby Australia in April but on Wednesday he was awarded a plum role in Australia’s bid to host the 2027 World Cup.
Kearns represents the rugby establishment. His decision to front a campaign to remove the RA executive and board in April a rare act of aggression from someone who has traditionally maintained neutrality in public was significant and controversial.
Some observers believe it could have cost him a tilt at the vacant RA top job, a role he coveted but missed out on when Raelene Castle was installed in December 2017.
