Brett Whiteley painting set to break Australian art auction records – Sydney Morning Herald
Henri’s Armchair is set to go under the hammer tonight for robust estimates of between $5 and $7 million.
“Brett Whiteley is obviously one of the most celebrated Australian artists. He’s had three paintings sell around the $3 million mark; his most popular series of paintings is the Lavender Bay series and this is a major painting from that series.”
The Henri Matisse inspired canvas was painted from 1974 to 1975 using oil, ink and charcoal on canvas and shows the view of Whiteley’s studio home over Sydney Harbour.
