Videos posted to social media showed thousands of people packed into shopping centres across the city trying to take advantage of Boxing Day sales.
In Bondi Junction, shoppers were seen lining up outside stores.
In Homebush, queues of cars stretched for hundreds of metres as people waited patiently to get into DFO.
