The mining giant has set targets to slash emissions by 30 per cent in the next decade and tackle its wider carbon footprint.

For BHP, Scope 3 emissions include the massive amounts of carbon dioxide emitted by customers of its key commodity, iron ore, and turn it into steel, as well as the customers of its metallurgical coal also used in the emissions-intensive steelmaking process and thermal coal used in power plants. Their emissions intensity refers to the amount of carbon emitted for every tonne of steel produced or each megawatt hour of power generated.
