Australian citizen and Aung San Suu Kyi advisor Sean Turnell ‘detained’

Sean Turnell, an Australian economic advisor to Myanmar’s Aung San Suu Kyi, said in a message to Reuters he was being detained, days after she was overthrown in a coup.
Key points:
- Professor Turnell heads the Myanmar Development Institute and is an advisor to Ms Suu Kyi
- He described the military coup against Myanmar’s democratically-elected government as “heartbreaking”
- Thousands have taken to the streets of Yangon and Melbourne to protest the coup and Ms Suu Kyi’s detention
“I guess you will soon hear of it, but I am being detained,” he said.
“Being charged with something, but not sure what. I am fine and strong, and not guilty of anything,” he said, with a smile emoji.
It was not subsequently possible to contact him.
