“With average writing incomes now so low, many writers are no longer able to hold their place in the industry, and give up or significantly reduce their writing,” Earls said.
He noted that federal Arts Minister Paul Fletcher wrote this year that during the pandemic “more than ever Australia will need its storytellers” – but this was at odds with the reality of cuts in Australia Council funding.
