Australia Day begins with sunrise viewings for early risers

People have gathered early to watch the sunrise on Australia Day, as the nation prepares for a more subdued day due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A raft of events of both celebration and protest are planned around the country.

In Sydney, the sun rose on an Opera House lit up with an artwork by NSW Indigenous artist and Yaegl woman Frances Belle-Parker.

Some early risers made their way to Bondi to watch the sun rise over the water.

NSW lifesavers have warned beachgoers their resources will be stretched today as the state continues to swelter through a heatwave.

Sydney is expected to hit 36 degrees Celsius while in the west, the mercury could reach 41C.
