Austal is also the frontrunner to build six new offshore patrol boats for the Philippines, where it already has a substantial shipbuilding footprint.
In a briefing widely reported in the Philippines, Mr Robinson suggested the deal to buy the Hanjin shipyard could be finalised in the next two months.
Austal went into a trading pause on Thursday before issuing a statement acknowledging Mr Robinsons comments and saying it would keep the market informed of any developments.
