Truly immersive theatre is a rare thing. In the Malthouse’s upcoming extravaganza, Because the Night, even the actors are unsure what to expect.
With this piece, the actors are only one cog in the wheel. Because the set is so incredible and is so immersive and there are secret rooms, and people can open drawers and read books, I feel less pressure as an actor.
Malthouse artistic director Matt Lutton dreamed up the massive undertaking in the midst of difficult times. I did go crazy during lockdown and this is one of the results. Lockdown was exhausting because we were doing a lot of work that then had no outcomes. Being an emotional container…
