South32 said weaker commodity prices and a high Australian dollar offset a boost in sales volumes in its first half ended December 31.
The company reported a net profit for the period of $US53 million ($68.4 million), down 46 per cent on the prior first half.
The company declared an interim dividend of US1.4¢ per share fully franked.
The company said underlying EBIT declined by 4 per cent to $US282 million but underlying earnings rose by 4 per cent to $US136 million.
