Aslan Karatsev reaches Australian Open quarter-finals in first grand slam outing
Playing in the main draw of a grand slam for the first time, unheralded Russian Aslan Karatsev is into the quarter-finals of the Australian Open.
The 27-year-old played his first ATP Tour match back in 2013, but did not get his first win at the top level until 2015 and only added two more in 2020 before reaching Melbourne Park this year.
After coming through qualifying, Karatsev claimed the scalp of eighth seed Diego Schwartzman in straight sets in before taking down 20th-seeded Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime in the fourth round on Sunday.
The Russian rallied after dropping the first two sets on Margaret Court Arena, coming back to win 3-6, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-4 over almost three-and-a-half hours.
