Ash Barty has retired during her Italian Open quarter-final clash in Rome with Coco Gauff because of an arm injury that has cast a cloud over her bid to regain her French Open crown.

  • Barty’s withdrawal from the Italian Open quarter-final was a precautionary measure  
  • She said the pain in her arm was “too severe” to play on
