Anthony Fauci rejects Donald Trump’s claims US coronavirus figures ‘far exaggerated’
America’s top infectious disease expert has rejected US President Donald Trump’s claim the country’s coronavirus numbers have been greatly exaggerated, saying “the deaths are real deaths”.

- Mr Trump said “the number of cases and deaths of the China Virus is far exaggerated in the United States”
- Anthony Fauci disputed that, saying the US was averaging 2,000 to 3,000 COVID-19 deaths a day
- Dr Fauci is optimistic the pace of vaccinations will increase
Mr Trump, a Republican who will leave office on January 20 after losing a bid for a second term to Democrat Joe Biden, has frequently downplayed the severity of the pandemic.
He has also scorned and ignored federal recommendations for containing the virus’s spread.
