Coronavirus vs AIDS: I have lived through an epidemic my whole adult life. Hearing people complain about COVID-19 has been frustrating.
Occasionally condoms broke or came off, or I slipped up and put myself at risk, after which I lived in a state of anxiety for up to six months waiting for reliable antibody test results. Then I renewed my promise to myself to be more careful, to do better.
We did this because we knew that unprotected sex could be fatal. We did this as we mourned and buried friends and co-workers and ex-lovers and attended more funerals than any young person should ever have to.
