When I first started in computers, most of the big companies made their own silicon and much of it was RISC based. IBM had its own version of the PowerPC chip. Sun, of course. Sun had the SPARC processor. HP had their own PA-RISC chips. It was what distinguished you from your competitors.One by one, they all dropped their chips in favor of Intel’s i86 CISC architecture.
