ALDI supermarket shopper shares secret code on seafood products – 7NEWS.com.au
A customer has shared a fascinating find on the back of some of ALDI’s most popular items, and it could change the way you shop.

An ALDI customer has shared a little-known detail on the back of many favourite buys at the popular supermarket.
Shopper Ahlam took to a popular Facebook page to reveal a secret code on the back of ALDIs seafood products which tells you from which country and region the item originates.
While all products are required to give country of origin details on the pack, the new information means customers can access even more specific information about where the seafood items have been sourced.
The interesting detail comes at a time when Australians are keener than ever to purchase locally made and farmed produce.
I know seafood gets a bad call out, shopper Ahlam said on the Aldi Mums Facebook page.
I just wanted to share something with you all that I learnt and hopefully it will solve all the do you know where your fish comes from dramas.

Each box has a code for the fish area/catchment area caught. You can then look it up to know which areas your fish has come from and what practises they use.
Here you can see FAO 81. Hope this helps everyone in the future.
Ahlam shared an image of one ALDI seafood buy, which is made in New Zealand, which says FAO Catchment Area: 81.
A quick internet search shows that this particular area covers a significant part of the Southwest Pacific, including a section of Australias east coast, New Zealands entire coastline and waters to the right of New Zealand.

Added Ahlam: From what Ive read, ALDI is making great progress to be sustainable, responsible and accountable. Personally, I dont buy non-Australian and was pleasantly surprised to see this info.
The find was welcomed by many other ALDI shoppers.
Thank you for sharing, I never knew this, said one.

Added another: This is so helpful.
ALDI has confirmed that the transparency on the origin of its seafood products is part of ALDIs wider commitment to ensure all ALDI own-brand fish and seafood will be responsibly sourced by the end of 2020.
