The royal commission heard 50 per cent of residents in aged care are depressed and getting treatment for mental health is impossible.
A geriatric expert says organising for an aged care resident with a mental illness to see a specialist was next to impossible unless a patient was very sick.
There was a “dearth of identification and assessment of mental health problems” among the elderly including in aged care facilities, Dr Alison Argo, a Queensland psychologist specialising in geriatric care told the Royal Commission on Aged Care Safety and Quality.
