AFL confirms return of 20-minute quarters following coronavirus-interrupted 2020 season

The AFL has announced matches will revert back to the normal quarter lengths of 20 minutes plus time on next season, but the fixture will still have a floating element in 2021.
Key points:
- Quarters will return to the traditional 20 minutes plus time on in 2021
- They had been reduced to 16 minutes plus time on as part of the AFL’s strategy to complete its 2020 season
- The half-time break will be 20 minutes in length, while quarter-time and three-quarter time will be six minutes each
The fixture squeeze created by the COVID-19 pandemic forced the AFL to reduce quarter lengths to 16 minutes plus time on in the 2020 season.
But quarters will return to the traditional length in 2021 after the league held discussions with the clubs and broadcasters.
