Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the causative agent of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), causes large-scale damage to the lungs triggered by a massive immune response. It causes inflammation and injury in the lungs and gives rise to diffuse alveolar damage resulting in the apoptosis of alveolar pneumocytes and pulmonary edema.
