Every year, hundreds of people are acknowledged for their achievement or service to the community through the Australia Day honours list.

This year’s awards sparked controversy on Friday — ahead of Tuesday’s official announcement — when it emerged that tennis great Margaret Court was in line to be promoted to the highest level of the Order of Australia.

Originally recognised as an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2007, Ms Court has been the subject of public criticism regarding her views about LGBTQI people in recent years.
