Australian Jordan Thompson has reached the last 16 of a grand slam for the first time in his career, beating Kazakh Mikhail Kukushkin.

World No.63 Thompson picked up a cheque for $343,000 for reaching the last 16 of the US Open after he powered past Kukushkin in emphatic style, 7-5, 6-4, 6-1. It is the largest single cheque he has collected in his career thus far, making up more than 10 per cent of his previous career earnings.
