Netflix serves up a comedy without humour – but at least it’s not boring – Sydney Morning Herald
If you thought David Lynch was a little too obvious in Mulholland Drive, this is your movie.
On the other hand, Kaufman is rarely boring. This is adapted from a novel by Canadian writer Iain Reid. Apart from working in snow, real and recreated, it would have been relatively cheap to make, so maybe that is why Kaufman jumped in. If he has any profound connection with the material, it may have something to do with the idea that high school is not life, but life is not high school either. For most of the picture, Kaufman keeps crossing these two streams, without much explanation.
