You may have heard the news: Australia’s carbon dioxide emissions have dropped to their lowest levels in more than two decades.
But rather than being a cause for celebrating, the modest drop underscores how much work lies ahead to reduce emissions.
Even with the most severe restrictions on travel in a century, with flights grounded and highways emptied, Australia is still emitting too much, said Will Steffen, a climate change expert at Australian National University.
