There are no hard and fast demands at the top of NZ Rugby to axe Aussie sides, although any new competition may not start until 2022.

A trans-Tasman Super Rugby competition with five teams from each nation is still on the cards, although 2022 is looking more and more likely as the first year of Southern Hemisphere rugbys new chapter.
While New Zealand Rugby has been painted a hard-hearted master telling Australia to cut two or three teams, Stuff understands the thinking on this side of the ditch is far more nuanced than that, with an open-minded approach to the number of teams.
