There’s little point in Hawthorn persisting in playing Shaun Burgoyne over the final rounds of what should be his final season in brown and gold.
That said, the send-offs for Hodge and Roughead were the AFL’s answer to the last episodes of M.A.S.H. and Cheers – beautifully scripted, respectful with lump-in-throat moments and impeccable performances from the lead actors (Hodge playing his customary part like “Hawkeye” Pearce, Roughead booting six goals).
