CHAMPION broad jumper Finlay John Campbell was well on his way to the 1940 Helsinki Olympics, when war broke out in Europe.
In February 1939, Campbell – also a promising sprinter – had just recorded what the local Daily News described as “probably the most brilliant athletic performance ever registered in Western Australia” at Leederville Oval with a broad jump of 24 ft 3 1/8in – just inches from the Australian record.
