Melbourne’s lockdown has hit business in the city hard but new data reveals Sydney’s economy is also sputtering despite a much lower COVID-19 caseload.

“Our index suggests that, while Melbourne is experiencing a real lockdown, Sydney is experiencing a perceived lockdown,” said Taylor Fry principal Alan Greenfield.
The report shows a “tale of four cities” pattern is emerging as the relatively COVID-safe state capitals of Perth and Brisbane make slow but steady progress towards recovery while economic conditions in Melbourne and Sydney deteriorate compared with June.
