Former winner Jason Day has taken heart from remaining in contention despite what he described as a “poor” round at the PGA Championship in California.

The 2016 US Open champion is at nine-under, one shot clear of Scottie Scheffler (65) and Cameron Champ (67) with a further shot back to Collin Morikawa, Paul Casey and two-time defending champion Brooks Koepka.
