“It was the first hour in our first official patrol when things kicked into action.
We were doing a patrol in the buggy, and we were about 400m down the beach when we got waved down by this woman’s friends.
They were pointing out into the surf, telling us “person out there”, and she was only just visible to us.
The conditions weren’t great, and she was clearly struggling to swim back in.
